Fungal Diseases/Aspergillus

meningitis-aspergillus-fumigatus-285Aspergillosis is the name of a group of conditions caused by a mould called aspergillus. This family of moulds usually affects the respiratory system (windpipe, sinuses and lungs), but can spread to anywhere in the body. Symptoms can vary from mild wheezing to coughing up blood and people with weakened immune systems are at a greater risk of being more severely affected. Manchester have a center for Fungal Diseases see the following link National Aspergillosis Centre Withenshaw Hospital.

Aspergillosis is the name given to a wide variety of diseases caused by infection by fungi of the genus Aspergillus. The majority of cases occur in people with underlying illnesses such as tuberculosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but with otherwise healthy immune systems. If it’s possible that you have aspergillosis, a number of checks and tests can be carried out to confirm the diagnosis and identify the specific type.

One of my friends found this piece for me to read about aspergillosis which has been found twice in my sputum tests over the past 2 years. As I find out more about aspergillosis and when it does and does not need treatment I will add to this post.
